Where to Stay in Krabi in 2026. Thailand's Next Great Beach Base
Krabi is on every next-big-destination list this year. How Ao Nang, Railay, Klong Muang, and Krabi Town compare, with real 2026 prices.
Phuket gets the direct long-haul flights, the name recognition, and the tour buses. Forty minutes across Phang Nga Bay, Krabi province has the same limestone karsts rising out of the same green water, at roughly half the room rate. Travelers have noticed. Krabi keeps appearing on this year's next-big-destination lists, usually framed as the place Phuket regulars go when they want Thailand to feel like Thailand again.
Krabi is a province on Thailand's Andaman coast, about 80 minutes by air from Bangkok. A mid-range double in Ao Nang runs $50 to $90 a night in the November to March high season, and drops 40 to 50 percent in the green season from May through October. That price gap, and the question of which base to pick, is most of what you need to get right. Here is how the options compare.
How Krabi is laid out
Krabi is not an island. The province sits on the mainland, with a small riverside capital (Krabi Town), a busy beach hub (Ao Nang), a quieter resort strip to the north (Klong Muang and Tubkaek), and a boat-access-only peninsula that stars in every photo you have ever seen of the region (Railay). The islands you came for, including Koh Poda, Koh Hong, and the four-island circuit, are day trips by longtail boat from any of these bases.
Distances are short. Krabi International Airport to Ao Nang is about 40 minutes by shuttle. Ao Nang to Railay is 15 minutes by longtail. Nothing here requires serious logistics, which is part of the appeal.
Ao Nang. The practical base
Ao Nang is where most first-time visitors should stay, and most do. The beachfront road has the highest concentration of hotels, restaurants, dive shops, and boat operators in the province. It is not the prettiest beach in Krabi. It is the most useful one, and the longtail boat queue at its eastern end is the gateway to everywhere better.
Hotel pricing here is the province's benchmark. Clean three-star places with pools sit in the $40 to $70 range in high season. Upper mid-range resorts like Centara Ao Nang and Avana Ao Nang run $90 to $160 for beachfront position. Book November through February stays at least two months out. Ao Nang sells through in peak weeks, and the properties that hold their price best are the ones within a five-minute walk of the beach.
One honest note. Ao Nang's main strip is built for tourism, with everything that implies. If you want quiet, look north.
Railay. The one on the postcards
Railay is a peninsula, not an island, but 300-meter cliffs cut it off from the road network, so every arrival is by boat. That filter changes the atmosphere completely. No cars, no scooter traffic, just sand paths between the cliffs, a rock-climbing scene that has been famous since the 1990s, and Phra Nang Beach at the southern tip, which makes a strong claim to being the best beach on the Andaman coast.
You pay for the setting. Railay Beach Club and the mid-range resorts on the west side run $120 to $250 a night in high season. Rayavadee, the peninsula's five-star flagship, starts around $700. Budget travelers head over the headland to Tonsai, where climber bungalows still go for under $30. Staying a night or two on Railay is worth the premium for the sunset hours after the day-trippers leave. Doing your whole week there is a splurge with diminishing returns.
Klong Muang and Tubkaek. The quiet resort strip
Twenty minutes north of Ao Nang, the Klong Muang and Tubkaek beaches hold a string of self-contained resorts facing the Hong Islands. This is where you stay if the plan is pool, beach, massage, repeat. Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra and Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort anchor the strip in the $120 to $200 range, and Banyan Tree Krabi sits at the top end from about $350. Restaurants outside the resorts are limited, so budget for hotel dining or taxi runs to Ao Nang.
Krabi Town. The budget and food base
Krabi Town gets skipped by almost everyone, which is exactly why it works for some travelers. The provincial capital sits on a river 25 minutes from the beaches, with guesthouses from $15 and solid boutique options under $50. The weekend night market along the riverfront is the best cheap eating in the province. Fried chicken with sticky rice, boat noodles, and grilled river prawns for a fraction of beachfront prices.
Stay here if your budget is tight, if you are passing through to Koh Lanta, or if you want a night market and morning wet market instead of a beach bar. Otherwise base at the beach and visit for dinner.
When to go and what it costs
High season runs November through March. Dry days, calm seas, and every boat tour operating on schedule. Rates peak between mid-December and mid-January, when Ao Nang mid-range rooms push past $100 and Railay resorts sell out weeks ahead.
April is hot shoulder season, with temperatures in the high 30s Celsius and the Songkran water festival in the middle of the month. May through October is the green season. Afternoon monsoon storms, some island tours canceled in rough weather, and hotel rates 40 to 50 percent below peak. September and October are the wettest months. Getting there and around
Krabi International Airport (KBV) has nonstop service from Bangkok on multiple carriers, with a flight time around 80 minutes, plus direct regional links from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. From the airport, shared shuttles to Ao Nang cost about 150 baht and taxis around 600. Around town, songthaews (shared pickup trucks) run the Ao Nang to Krabi Town route all day. Ferries connect Krabi to Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, and Phuket, which makes it an easy first or last stop on a longer Andaman route. The verdict
First trip, five nights or fewer, base in Ao Nang and buy a night or two on Railay if the budget allows. Resort trip, go straight to Klong Muang or Tubkaek. Backpacking or island-hopping, split Krabi Town and Tonsai. Whatever you pick, the karsts are the same and the water does not check your room rate.
